Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 13, The Hague-based Wave Energy Collective (Weco) has secured €600,000 in funding to accelerate development and testing of its modular wave energy technology. The investment comes from the Netherlands Enabling Water Technology fund (NEW-ttt), Init Power, and Cyriel de Jong, and will be used to advance open-sea trials and refine Weco’s next-generation prototype ahead of larger-scale demonstrations.
“This investment marks a major step forward for Weco,” said Cas van de Voort, Co-founder of Weco. “It provides us additional resources to secure the next steps in validating our technology under real sea conditions. We’re excited to continue our mission of turning waves into watts.”
Founded in 2023, Weco is developing lightweight, modular, and storm-resilient wave energy converters (WEC) suitable for offshore and island applications. Its Kaizen system converts the circular motion of waves into continuous energy through a compact mechanical design, maximizing energy capture while simplifying deployment and maintenance.
Sybo Zijlstra, Investment Manager at NEW-ttt, said: “We are proud to support Weco in their mission to harness the power of the sea and turn it into sustainable energy. Their technology perfectly aligns with our vision to drive groundbreaking innovations that accelerate the energy transition – even on the open sea.”
Frank van Beek of Init Power B.V. added: “Weco combines strong engineering fundamentals with a clear vision for impact. We see significant potential for this system in the offshore energy transition going forward.”
Weco plans to conduct its next testing campaign in 2026 with local and international partners to validate performance and reliability. The company aims to integrate wave energy into the broader renewable energy mix, supporting sustainable power generation in coastal and offshore regions.
In October, Weco’s Kaizen 2.0 wave energy prototype underwent trials in the North Sea, marking an important milestone in its ongoing development process. The results from these tests will inform improvements in efficiency, durability, and scalability for future deployments.
By combining modular design, storm resilience, and ease of installation, Weco’s technology seeks to provide a practical solution for converting wave motion into clean, continuous electricity. With the new funding, the company is positioned to accelerate both its technical validation and the expansion of its wave energy systems for global applications.
The company emphasizes that its approach not only advances renewable energy adoption but also provides scalable solutions for offshore and island communities seeking reliable, locally generated electricity. The upcoming trials in 2026 are expected to demonstrate the Kaizen system’s potential to contribute meaningfully to sustainable energy infrastructure worldwide.
