Hitachi Rail, Sistem Win €126.5m HSL Signalling Contract in Spain

Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 17, Hitachi Rail and Sistem’s UTE consortium have been selected to provide signalling and traffic management technology for the Talayuela–Plasencia section of the Madrid–Extremadura High-Speed Line in Spain. The contract is valued at €126.5m (US$146.9m) and includes the installation of interlockings, train protection systems, fixed telecommunications, and the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2.

The agreement requires Hitachi Rail and Sistem to maintain all equipment installed under the project for 48 months after completion.

The project also encompasses the deployment of a Centralised Traffic Control system (CTCS), which will enable remote and real-time supervision of rail operations. Under the contract, Hitachi Rail and Sistem will be responsible for maintaining all installed equipment for a period of 48 months after the project is completed. Hitachi Rail noted that ERTMS Level 2 technology will serve as a central component of the signalling package.

Hitachi Rail has an extensive track record in Spain, having supplied signalling and telecommunications systems for more than 2,800km of the national high-speed network. The company also provides ongoing maintenance services for various routes. In addition, its ETR1000 trains operate on several high-speed corridors, serving 11 cities daily.

In parallel with its activities in Spain, Hitachi Rail has recently been awarded a contract to deliver rail systems for the modernisation of the Alexandria Raml Tram in Egypt. The contract was issued by the joint venture of Hassan Allam Construction and Arab Contractors. Under this project, Hitachi Rail will install signalling and communications systems, an operational control centre, and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

Across both projects, Hitachi Rail emphasises its focus on supporting transport development through digital technologies, modern traffic management tools, and rail system upgrades. The company stated that its experience in delivering rail infrastructure solutions is intended to support long-term efficiency and reliability for operators and passengers.
