Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 17, Nokia has announced a multi-year partnership with Surge, a major Indonesian provider of digital and telecommunications solutions, to expand internet connectivity nationwide through a large 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) network. The deployment will cover provinces including Java, Papua, and Maluku. According to the companies, rollout is scheduled to begin in December 2025.

The project will support Indonesia’s digital transformation objectives and aligns with the government’s “Affordable Broadband” initiative, which aims to reduce the digital divide by improving access to high-speed connectivity. Nokia will assist Surge in building a wide-scale 5G FWA network using the n50 spectrum band. The system is designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband access by utilising Nokia’s existing FTTx, IP and Optics infrastructure for backhaul and transport.

Nokia has developed a customised RAN and CPE solution specifically for Surge to address FWA requirements. The solution is intended to provide reliable broadband access in locations where fibre infrastructure remains limited. The company will also supply equipment from its AirScale Radio Access Network portfolio, along with its latest generation AirScale Baseband combined with Remote Radio Heads. Zero-footprint site solutions will support deployment in different local environments. All components integrate Nokia’s energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology to enhance network performance, efficiency and reliability.

Surge will use Nokia’s MantaRay NM intelligent network management system, which offers a unified network view for streamlined monitoring and management. The agreement also includes deployment, maintenance and support services enhanced by AI to improve network performance, operational efficiency and overall safety.

Shannedy Ong, Director at Surge Indonesia, said: “This deal with Nokia gives us a platform to build a unique and best-in-class 5G network ready for the digital world that will bridge the digital divide and bring affordable connectivity to even more people. Digitalization will give our customers the best possible user experience.”

Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia, said: “This significant new partnership will see us work collaboratively to deliver premium connectivity experiences and accelerate the digitalization of society in Indonesia. We have created a unique solution combining our best-in-class technology that directly solves the specific demands of Surge as they deploy 5G connectivity across the country.”

The partnership reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure and expand broadband availability using advanced 5G FWA technology supported by high-efficiency RAN, customised CPE solutions and integrated network management tools.
