Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 19, Venture Global Inc. has submitted applications for both a construction permit to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and an export authorization to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for an expansion of its Plaquemines LNG complex in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. The company announced on Monday that it plans to increase the facility’s capacity by over 30 million metric tons per annum (MTPA), marking a nearly 40 percent rise from the initial capacity outlined earlier in 2025. The expansion is designed to meet growing market demand and will enhance the plant's liquefaction capacity through optimization of its liquefaction trains.
Venture Global said it had applied for a construction permit before FERC and export authorization before DOE for a project to add over 30 million metric tons a year of capacity to the Louisiana facility.
This expansion, which will be carried out incrementally in three phases, will consist of 32 modular liquefaction trains. The total peak production capacity of the entire Plaquemines complex is expected to exceed 58 MTPA once the expansion is complete.
Venture Global’s CEO, Greg Sabel, highlighted the strategic nature of this expansion, stating: “This strategic step provides Venture Global with the optionality to develop a scalable project that can efficiently meet market needs as they evolve.”
The initial announcement for the brownfield expansion in March 2025 included plans for 24 liquefaction trains. At that time, Venture Global estimated the total investment to be around $18 billion. The first LNG cargo from the Plaquemines facility was shipped in late 2024 to Germany for Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG.
Venture Global emphasized the speed at which Plaquemines LNG has progressed, noting that the project is one of the fastest greenfield LNG facilities of its size to reach both first production and first cargo delivery. This achievement mirrors the success of the company’s earlier project, Calcasieu Pass, which also reached these milestones ahead of schedule.
Sabel commented on this milestone, saying: "In just five years, Venture Global has built, produced, and launched exports from two large-scale LNG projects, which has never been done before in the history of the industry."
Both the Plaquemines LNG project and the earlier Calcasieu Pass project have exceeded the U.S. Department of Energy’s requirement for LNG export authorizations, which mandates that exports must commence within seven years of receiving the non-FTA export authorization. This early achievement underscores the company's ability to execute large-scale LNG projects efficiently.
The expansion at Plaquemines LNG represents a key development for Venture Global, as the company positions itself to meet growing international demand for liquefied natural gas.
