Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 22, Sungrow has been chosen by Zelestra to supply advanced photovoltaic inverter solutions for the 273 MW AC San Martín solar project in Arequipa, Peru – the largest solar initiative in the country to date. The facility, inaugurated by President Dina Boluarte, is now fully operational and will significantly contribute to Peru’s renewable energy targets.
MINEM plans to commission 14 solar projects totalling 2.5GW by 2028.
Located at 2,500 metres altitude in an arid desert environment with extreme temperature swings and low humidity, the plant required robust equipment capable of reliable performance under challenging conditions. Sungrow is providing its innovative 1+X modular inverter combined with an 8.8 MW medium-voltage turnkey station. The modular design, with a minimum capacity of 1.1 MW per unit, offers flexible scaling, simplified maintenance, and optimised operation in harsh climates.
The project incorporates bifacial modules and single-axis trackers to maximise energy capture. From contract signing to commercial operation, the plant was completed in just 16 months, enabling early revenue generation for stakeholders.
Once fully operational, San Martín is expected to generate 830 GWh of clean electricity annually, sufficient to supply over 440,000 households while avoiding approximately 166,549 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Construction created more than 900 local jobs, delivering economic benefits to the Arequipa region.
Zelestra CEO Latam José Luis García said: “We view Sungrow not just as a supplier, but as a strategic long-term partner. Their technical capabilities and regional track record give us confidence as we scale our renewable energy portfolio across Latin America.”
Sungrow Latin America regional director Gonzalo Feito said: “Zelestra placed top priority on regulatory compliance and technical excellence. With our deep regional expertise, proven product reliability, and strong service support across Latin America, we’re proud to help Zelestra bring this historic project to life and drive forward Peru’s clean energy transition.”
The San Martín project aligns with Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines plan to commission 2.5 GW of grid-connected solar capacity by 2028. Sungrow now has over 1 GWh of contracted capacity in Peru, supported by a dedicated local team handling sales, engineering, and after-sales service. This partnership follows a recent 1 GWh energy storage agreement between Sungrow and Zelestra for the Aurora hybrid project in Chile, further strengthening their collaboration across the region.
