Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 29, Micron Technology has announced a 1.5 trillion yen ($9.6 billion) investment to construct an advanced memory production facility in western Japan focused on next-generation chips for artificial intelligence applications.

Micron Technology's Hiroshima Plant in Higashi-Hiroshima, Japan, in 2022. The company will construct a new memory manufacturing facility.

The new plant, located in Hiroshima Prefecture, will manufacture cutting-edge DRAM using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. It represents Micron's largest single investment in Japan to date and strengthens the company's global supply chain for high-performance memory solutions.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with mass production expected to start in 2028. The facility will complement Micron's existing operations in Hiroshima and help meet growing worldwide demand for AI-enabled computing, including data centre servers, personal computers, and automotive systems.

The Japanese government is providing substantial support through its semiconductor industry strategy, covering approximately half of the total project cost. This aligns with efforts to enhance domestic production capacity for strategic technologies.

Micron's investment will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and contribute to technological advancement in the region. The company already operates a major research and development centre in Hiroshima and has maintained a manufacturing presence in Japan for over two decades.

The new facility will play a key role in ensuring stable supply of advanced memory products essential for the continued expansion of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing worldwide.
