On December 22, the Mendi Phase II Battery Energy Storage Project of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. in the UK officially commenced construction.
As a benchmark project for China Huaneng's international development, the Mendi Phase II project has an installed capacity of 49.9 megawatts and an energy storage capacity of 149.7 megawatt-hours. It represents another significant achievement following the successful commissioning of the Mendi Phase I project. The Phase II project utilizes a fully domestically produced battery energy storage system, effectively extending the energy storage duration through deep iterative technological pathways. The project aims to be connected to the grid by the end of 2026 and is of great significance for enhancing the power system's regulation capability and promoting the energy transition in the UK.
The Huaneng Mendi Phase I project has an installed capacity of 99.8 megawatts and entered commercial operation in June 2021. Its main equipment was manufactured and integrated by Chinese enterprises, with a localization rate exceeding 70%. It is the first large-scale battery energy storage project constructed by a Chinese power company in a developed country.
