Amtrak recently unveiled its new Airo trains, the company's next-generation passenger trains designed to enhance the passenger experience and operational reliability. The launch of the Airo trains marks a significant step in Amtrak's fleet modernization program.

At an event in Washington D.C., Amtrak President Roger Harris, Board Member Steve Bradbury, Federal Railroad Administration Administrator David Fink, and Siemens Mobility CEO Tobias Baur toured the Airo train. They emphasized the train's role in improving rail service.

The first Airo trainsets will be prioritized for deployment on the Cascades route, serving the Pacific Northwest corridor and connecting Seattle, Portland (Oregon), Vancouver (British Columbia), and Eugene (Oregon). According to Amtrak, the eight Airo trainsets planned for the Cascades route are expected to be fully manufactured by 2026.

Siemens Mobility is manufacturing the Airo trains at its factory in Sacramento, California. Later this year, Airo trainsets designed for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor routes will complete production and testing, with commercial service for these trains planned to begin in 2027. In the coming years, Amtrak also plans to deploy an additional 83 Airo trainsets nationwide, further expanding its service network.

The Airo fleet is a key component of Amtrak's efforts to modernize its trains and services, promising to offer passengers more comfortable and efficient travel options. As the Airo trains gradually enter service, Amtrak is progressing toward its goal of renewing its passenger infrastructure.
