Wedoany.com Report-Nov 28, The project, valued at approximately €56.1 million, aims to secure the port's performance while supporting ecological goals in port logistics.
The Bremen Port Railway plans to increase its operational capacity by expanding the staging area at Speckenbüttel station in Bremerhaven.
The infrastructure upgrade involves adding a new seven-track extension to the existing station facility, which currently has 16 tracks. Each new track will have a minimum usable length of 740 meters to accommodate longer freight trains, addressing the growing demands of rail freight transport. The expansion also includes modern equipment such as brake test systems, switch heating, and improved track lighting.
In addition to the physical enhancements, the infrastructure at Speckenbüttel will be integrated into a central electronic interlocking system (ESTW). This integration is part of DB InfraGO's digitalization initiative to modernize the high-performance corridor between Bremen-Burg and Bremerhaven. The updated control and safety technology is expected to increase the efficiency and reliability of rail freight services.
The timing of the expansion aligns with the planned general renovation of the DB high-performance corridor between Bremen and Bremerhaven, aiming to prevent potential bottlenecks during construction phases. Bremerhaven serves as a significant port hub in Europe, with over half of its container throughput transported by rail.
