The Syrian Ministry of Agriculture recently unveiled the 2030 Livestock Strategy, aiming to improve national food security by rebuilding animal production and enhancing sustainability. This initiative was launched after the country's agricultural sector experienced prolonged losses.
The strategy focuses on revitalizing livestock, poultry, and fisheries, sectors critical to rural livelihoods and the agri-food supply chain. Official data indicates that livestock numbers have declined by approximately 40% in recent years due to damaged infrastructure, insufficient veterinary services, climate challenges, and feed supply issues.
Core components of the strategy include herd recovery and enhancing production efficiency. Plans involve introducing high-yield cattle and sheep breeds to small and medium-scale breeders through structured import programs, while also rehabilitating artificial insemination centers and improving genetic resources. Poultry production will also be expanded to increase overall output.
Feed security is another key focus area. Measures involve upgrading feed processing facilities, promoting local alternative feed ingredients, expanding climate-adapted fodder crop cultivation, and strengthening laboratory testing and quality certification to meet international standards.
Freshwater aquaculture has also been prioritized. Plans include expanding fry production, rehabilitating hatcheries, and promoting cage farming in suitable reservoirs. The government will attract private investment through regulation and financial incentives and encourage household fish farming to boost rural incomes.
Veterinary reform is a crucial part of the strategy. Authorities plan to upgrade diagnostic laboratories, strengthen quarantine systems, expand vaccine production, and align disease surveillance with global health standards. Under the "One Health" framework, a national zoonotic disease early warning system will be established, integrating animal, human, and environmental health monitoring.
The strategy also introduces a national livestock identification and data registration system to enhance traceability, disease control, and sector planning. Furthermore, veterinarians and technicians will be trained, related facilities will be upgraded, and alignment with regional and international quality standards will be pursued.
Officials noted that this 2030 roadmap aims to restore the livestock sector's contribution to economic recovery, strengthen rural livelihoods, and ensure long-term food resilience.
