USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden recently communicated with multiple trading partners, noting that interest in biofuels is increasing in other countries.Image related to US ethanol demand and trade

Vaden stated: "This summer, Vietnam is implementing the E10 standard. They look to the U.S. as a supplier of ethanol, and as infrastructure is built and ethanol plants are constructed in Vietnam, they want U.S. corn as feedstock for these facilities. Within the framework of the trade agreement reached with Japan, there are clear requirements for importing sustainable or synthetic aviation fuel, which can be sourced from the United States."

The U.S. biofuels industry is taking a wait-and-see approach on the issue of year-round E15 sales. The House committee responsible for advancing the relevant work recently missed a key deadline; however, Sam Hudson of Cornbelt Marketing pointed out that international market demand is strong and cautioned that further increases in domestic ethanol demand could pose challenges for the U.S. biofuels industry.

Hudson said: "Every time we advance demand-related regulations, there always seems to be some mitigation measure, which is unfortunate. We continue to see small refinery exemptions, so if we just turn the valve, it might adversely affect other areas. I focus on the export market, which has expanded significantly over the last two or three years, potentially even more than the expected increase from E15. I believe the natural growth of the global market exceeds what might be achievable domestically. Given that current usage is already at record levels, I don't think further supply increases are necessary."

The timing for the E15 committee to release guidelines remains uncertain. The original plan was to complete the legislative draft for discussion by the end of February, but that deadline has passed.
