Wedonay.com Report on Mar 6th, During the 2026 Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) annual convention, Peruvian Minister of Energy and Mines, Ángelo Alfaro, met with Ulises Solis, General Manager of Macusani Yellowcake. Solis presented the current status of lithium exploration projects in southern Peru, including progress made in quantifying lithium reserves. As a critical mineral, lithium plays a significant role in the global energy transition.
Minister Alfaro stated that the ministry will continue to support the development of new projects to enhance the value of Peru's natural resources and strengthen the country's position in the global mining sector. Macusani Yellowcake is a subsidiary of Canadian company American Lithium Corp., primarily operating in Peru's Puno region, focusing on the exploration and future extraction of lithium and uranium.
The company's Falchani project is considered one of the world's significant hard-rock lithium deposits, estimated to contain approximately 9.5 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent. Although initial plans aimed for operations to commence in 2026-2027, current forecasts suggest the start date may be delayed until 2028 or 2029, depending on the approval process for the detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
Additionally, Macusani Yellowcake holds the Macusani project, a large undeveloped uranium resource, and the Quelcaya project, a recent area of focus for lithium and uranium exploration. The company noted that preliminary exploration at the Quelcaya project does not require prior consultation, which helps accelerate geological research work.
The meeting also involved American Lithium Corp.'s CEO Alex Tsakumis, COO & Director Lawrence Stefan, Peru's General Director of Mining Promotion and Sustainable Development Walter Sánchez, and Macusani Yellowcake's advisor Augusto Cauti. Discussions centered on lithium mining development, environmental impact assessments, and the prospects for Peru's mining industry.
