Wedoany.com Report on Mar 6th, Carlsberg Group has released an updated version of its global Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, "Brewing Tomorrow," to address the impact of its expanded beverage portfolio following the acquisition of Britvic in 2025. This acquisition increased Carlsberg's value chain emissions by nearly 1 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, prompting the company to adjust its sustainability roadmap while reaffirming its goal of achieving net-zero across the value chain by 2040.

The updated plan revolves around four pillars: decarbonization, protecting nature, empowering people, and inspiring choice. Carlsberg has set new absolute Scope 3 emission reduction targets aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and adjusted the target year for key milestones from 2030 to 2032. The company has also committed to expanding regenerative agriculture, increasing the use of circular packaging, and introducing sugar reduction targets for its soft drinks portfolio.
Jacob Aarup-Andersen, CEO of Carlsberg Group, stated: "Carlsberg is on an exciting journey. We are evolving as a company, with a broader product portfolio and wider geographic reach. 'Brewing Tomorrow' is our roadmap for sustainability action, building on strong performance in recent years. The goal is clear: to drive impact and ensure Carlsberg is a future-fit business."
On the operational front, Carlsberg has made significant progress. Since 2024, absolute emissions from production facilities have decreased by 12%, and short-term value chain emissions have been reduced by 8%. Renewable electricity now accounts for 90% of its electricity mix, with the share from new renewable sources increasing from 6% to 19%. In terms of circular packaging, the proportion of recycled materials has reached 51%, achieving the target five years ahead of schedule.
Simon Boas Hoffmeyer, Vice President of Sustainability & ESG at Carlsberg Group, added: "With 'Brewing Tomorrow,' we are building on past experience while updating our focus for the future. The plan is integrated into our business: how we operate, how we engage across the value chain, how we develop our people, and how we create more choice in our expanding portfolio. It builds on decades of reducing our footprint while supporting our business growth. I am proud of our journey and cannot wait to bring it to life together with colleagues and partners around the world."

The revised ESG plan reflects the beverage industry's trend of responding to climate change and regulatory pressure. As investors pay closer attention to Scope 3 emissions, Carlsberg's climate strategy is shifting from commitments to concrete actions to manage growth risks and enhance long-term competitiveness.
