en.Weodoany.com Report on Mar 27th, DP World has handled its 10 millionth container at the Dakar Container Terminal in Senegal, marking a significant operational achievement since taking over the facility in 2008.

This milestone reflects the terminal's continuous transformation over nearly two decades, driven by DP World's investment and operational optimization. Since 2008, the company has invested approximately $340 million in modernization and capacity expansion, increasing annual throughput from 265,000 TEUs to 850,000 TEUs in 2025 and reducing vessel waiting times from 35 hours to near zero.

According to the World Bank's Container Port Performance Index, the Dakar Terminal is now rated as the most efficient port in Sub-Saharan Africa, serving as a crucial logistics gateway for Senegal and neighboring landlocked economies, supporting West African trade flows.

The terminal provides market access for regional agricultural exporters, such as thousands of cashew farmers in Casamance and Guinea-Bissau, who ship their products to Asian markets via Dakar. The facility employs about 730 staff, 99% of whom are Senegalese nationals, with employee skills upgraded to remotely operate advanced equipment from an on-site control room.

Mohammed Akoojee, CEO of DP World Africa, stated, "Dakar Terminal is a benchmark for efficiency and reliability in the region." He attributed the terminal's transformation to continuous investment, operational expertise, and local partnerships.

Clarence Rodrigues, CEO of DP World Dakar, noted, "Talent development is a core element of the terminal's technological advancement." Looking ahead, as DP World progresses with the development of the Ndayane Port, located about 50 km from Dakar, in partnership with British International Investment, Senegal's maritime sector will enter a new phase. The new port aims to address the physical limitations of the existing facility and provide more efficient inland logistics connectivity.
