en.Wedoany.com Reported - Electric vehicle fleet solutions provider amphos has built one of Scotland's first megawatt-level electric heavy truck charging hubs for the John G. Russell Group (Russell Group), located in North Lanarkshire and funded by Innovate UK. The charging station introduces megawatt charging technology into practical operations, demonstrating the role of high-power infrastructure in improving fleet efficiency.

The system achieves ultra-fast charging based on current Combined Charging System (CCS) technology, with heavy trucks completing a charge in approximately 40 minutes. A planned upgrade to the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) in July 2026 will further reduce charging time to about 20 minutes, roughly equivalent to a standard driver break. Each charging unit, manufactured by Vestel Mobility, can deliver up to 3.75 MW of high-voltage direct current.

This charging station is the second such facility in the UK and the first in Scotland. The UK's first megawatt charging station was commissioned in January 2026 at East Midlands Gateway, with a charging unit power of 1 MW.

Stephen Madden, Engineering Director at Russell Group, stated that megawatt charging enables fleets to charge heavy trucks during driver breaks and dispatch them fully charged quickly, fundamentally transforming the way electric vehicles are operated at scale. He described the project as a model for future megawatt charging infrastructure, emphasizing that it is not just about one site but about building a scalable foundation for zero-emission logistics across the UK and beyond.

Mark Oxtoby, CEO of amphos, believes the project marks a pivotal moment for electric freight in the UK. The upgrade from 1 MW to 3.75 MW charging represents a step change that will enable fleet operators nationwide to achieve fully electric, high-utilization heavy truck fleet operations.
