en.Wedoany.com Reported - Chelyabinsk Electrometallurgical Plant (ChEMK) has resumed production at its Ferroalloy Smelting and Processing Section (UVPP, formerly Workshop No. 5) since early June. The section was temporarily shut down in April this year, and this restart aims to reintegrate metal-containing materials into the production cycle to improve raw material utilization efficiency.

The Ferroalloy Smelting and Processing Section is an auxiliary production unit of the plant, with the core task of recovering and returning metal-containing materials generated at other production sites to the production process. The section is equipped with four furnaces, and its main process involves remelting the undersized fractions of silicomanganese ferroalloy.

Silicomanganese ferroalloy is smelted in Workshops No. 7 and No. 8, but during the crushing of finished alloy, some metal exists in non-commercial particle sizes. These undersized fractions, along with metal-containing concentrates extracted from slag, are sent to the Ferroalloy Smelting and Processing Section, where the metal is returned to the production process through remelting for use in finished products. This technology significantly reduces raw material consumption and enhances the overall operational efficiency of the plant.

To further improve efficiency, the section plans to master a new technology by late 2025 to early 2026. In addition to undersized silicomanganese ferroalloy fractions, the section has now begun processing materials formed during the cleaning of metallurgical ladles in Workshops No. 7 and No. 8. Although these materials are considered production residues, they contain a significant amount of metal. Previously, this raw material was not fully utilized, but it is now being sent to Workshop No. 5 for remelting, allowing the metal to be returned to production for new products, thereby reducing raw material consumption and lowering ferroalloy production costs.

Currently, the Ferroalloy Smelting and Processing Section employs approximately 170 people. Although the section suspended production, the team was retained and has now fully resumed work. Alexey Borodin, head of production management at ChEMK, stated that the resumption of the section's work is related to the accumulation of a sufficient amount of remelting raw materials. The UVPP performs the important task of returning metal-containing materials to the production cycle, which helps utilize enterprise resources more efficiently and reduce production costs.
