en.Wedoany.com Reported - Indian green hydrogen and ammonia developer AM Green has signed a memorandum of understanding with V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) to develop the VOC Port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, into a green ammonia production and bunkering hub.

Under the agreement, AM Green and VOCPA plan to develop up to 200,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia bunkering capacity by 2029-30, with an estimated investment of approximately INR 20 billion. The parties also plan to expand capacity to 500,000 tonnes per year by 2035, with total investment increasing to INR 50 billion, depending on market demand and the adoption rate of low-carbon marine fuels.

The parties will explore pilot bunkering operations and jointly develop the necessary infrastructure to facilitate green ammonia bunkering in line with international best practices.

The agreement also supports AM Green's construction of a 1 million tonnes per year green ammonia production facility near the port, with an investment of INR 150 billion. AM Green has already completed land acquisition for most of the green hydrogen-ammonia complex.

The project also requires an investment of INR 350 billion in renewable energy generation. This development aligns with AM Green's target to develop over 4 million tonnes per year of green ammonia capacity across India by 2030.

This collaboration combines AM Green's large-scale green ammonia production capabilities with VOCPA's experience in liquid ammonia handling and its positioning as a national green hydrogen hub. By leveraging Thoothukudi's strategic location, port infrastructure, and industrial ecosystem, the parties aim to create a green fuel hub serving both domestic and international markets.

Gautam Reddy Kumbam, CEO of AM Green, stated that Thoothukudi is a natural gateway for India's green ammonia bunkering future, and the VOC Port's existing ammonia infrastructure, green hydrogen hub positioning, and connectivity to international shipping routes make this partnership a key cornerstone of AM Green's pan-India commercialization strategy.

Susanta Kumar Nath, Chairman of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, stated that the VOC Port has long been a cornerstone of India's ammonia supply chain, and the partnership with AM Green represents the next step in its journey toward becoming a world-class green fuel hub. The port authority is committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and institutional support to make Thoothukudi a leading destination for green ammonia bunkering and exports.

AMG, founded by the promoters of Greenko Group, is building a platform based on molecules, materials, and artificial intelligence technologies to achieve industrial decarbonization. The company is developing low-carbon ammonia projects at multiple locations in India, targeting a green ammonia capacity of 5 million tonnes per year. Its currently under-construction 1 million tonnes per year green ammonia plant will be one of the world's largest RFNBO-compliant green ammonia facilities. Additionally, AMG is developing production capabilities for other net-zero molecules and chemicals, including green caustic soda, e-methanol, olefins, and biofuels.
