Clariant and Technip Energies Introduce New Catalyst for Styrene Production

This advanced ethylbenzene dehydrogenation catalyst sets a new industry standard for styrene monomer production by operating efficiently at an ultra-low steam-to-oil ratio of 0.76 by weight, surpassing the previous benchmark of 1.02. The development marks a significant step forward in enhancing energy efficiency.
The StyroMax UL-100 is designed for use in existing styrene plants, as well as in revamp projects and new facilities. Through a partnership with Technip Energies, Clariant has tailored this catalyst to reduce steam consumption while maintaining high production levels. This breakthrough tackles a long-standing industry challenge: balancing energy savings with consistent output, which also helps lower the carbon footprint for producers.
Gene Mueller, head of ethylene and vice president of the Catalysts Americas business unit at Clariant, emphasized the collaboration’s success, stating: “Our close cooperation with Technip Energies has led to the development of StyroMax UL-100, a breakthrough in styrene catalyst technology.” He noted that the catalyst responds to customer needs, delivering both sustainability benefits and improved operational performance.

The StyroMax UL-100 is compatible with all Badger-licensed plants, ensuring broad applicability across existing units, upgrades, and new projects.
