en.Wedoany.com Reported - A planning application has been formally submitted for a proposed new Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) on St George’s Road in Glasgow, UK. The project, designed by Threesixty Architecture, is proposed on behalf of Albert Investment Co.

Named St George Studio PBSA, the project’s design concept is described as a "creative reinvention" of a unique urban block. By retaining existing facades and incorporating contemporary interventions, the scheme aims to repair the fragmented streetscape, highlight heritage value, and strengthen the visual importance of a key corridor running through Glasgow’s city centre.

The project will consolidate three existing commercial properties (including St George Studio) to provide 314 student bedrooms, while retaining commercial space and activating the street frontage through a glazed facade. Central to the design is the retention and celebration of the original St George Studio facade, which serves as both a testament to the site’s industrial heritage and a landmark element of the local townscape. The retained facade will form the building’s main entrance, guiding students into a sequence of communal spaces that integrate the historic structure with new apartments to the rear.

The design draws inspiration from the character of existing buildings and surrounding apartment blocks, employing a material palette of red and buff brick, complemented by sandstone detailing and soft green accents. Threesixty Architecture explains that the new building has been carefully composed to establish its own strong architectural identity. The main facade is layered to enhance the presence of the retained structure while ensuring appropriate deference to the prominent St George’s Mansions overlooking Charing Cross. The building massing has been refined to respect relationships with neighbouring properties, while improving visual comfort and daylight conditions.

A landscaped courtyard and roof terrace will provide communal spaces, creating opportunities for greenery, biodiversity, and social interaction within the urban block. A new pocket park at ground level, designed to meet practical requirements for emergency vehicle access, aims to enhance the development’s convenience and improve visual permeability for adjacent residences.

Developed in collaboration with Iceni Projects, Woolgar Hunter, Atelier Ten, Jensen Hughes, and LUC, the scheme is said to place equal emphasis on design quality, environmental performance, and long-term sustainability. Threesixty Architecture Director Stefano Faiella stated that the project presents a unique opportunity to revitalise a key city centre site while preserving an important part of the city’s architectural heritage. The scheme is a creative response to a challenging and unusual urban block, shaped through constructive engagement with local authorities and effective discussions with key stakeholders and the wider community. The result is a development that balances conservation and regeneration, delivering high-quality student accommodation while making a positive contribution to the evolving character of this part of Glasgow.
