en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mercamadrid has installed 10 new electric vehicle (EV) charging spaces in its new parking lot, located on the south side of the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, aiming to improve facility efficiency and promote sustainable mobility. Among them, 8 are fast charging points with a power of 50 kW, and 2 are ultra-fast charging points with a capacity of 150 kW. The institution has also added a charging point adapted for accessible vehicles.

Through this initiative, Mercamadrid expands its charging network to a total of 20 charging points and 38 EV spaces across various locations within the food distribution center. Over the past year, electricity supplied to EVs has increased by 20%, and the number of charging sessions has risen by 5%, reflecting the growing use of low-emission mobility solutions by businesses and users. All supplied electricity comes from 100% renewable sources.

Mercamadrid has also installed 30 new parking racks for personal mobility vehicles (PMVs), including bicycles and electric scooters, in different areas to facilitate access via sustainable transportation. With an average of over 15,000 vehicles entering the facility daily, this measure helps promote more sustainable urban logistics and aligns with the city's decarbonization goals.

The institution continues to strengthen its renewable energy generation capacity by adding two new photovoltaic facilities with a total power of 300 kW peak, of which 200 kW peak is located at the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, and the remaining 100 kW peak on the roof of the El Hervidero building. With these additions, Mercamadrid's total installed capacity reaches 660 kW peak, meeting its daytime basic electricity needs and reducing dependence on external energy sources.

This effort will be further advanced through the Mobilities for UE project, which plans to install an additional 700 kW peak of photovoltaic capacity at the Central Fish Market. The new infrastructure will be capable of storing up to 200 kW peak of surplus energy for later use, promoting energy self-consumption and powering autonomous vehicles planned within the framework of this European initiative.

These measures are complementary actions toward a more efficient and sustainable energy model. In 2021, Mercamadrid signed a cooperation agreement with the Madrid City Council to promote the development of new charging infrastructure and clean energy applied to logistics. These initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency, and technological innovation.
