en.Wedoany.com Reported - AboitizPower has commenced construction of a 60 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Naga City, Cebu, Philippines, with the facility slated to begin commercial operations in 2027, aiming to enhance grid reliability and support the growing energy demand in the central region of the country.

Located within the Colon Village Naga Power Plant complex, this standalone energy storage facility will provide contingency and regulating reserve services to help the grid manage fluctuations in power supply and demand. The company stated that the project marks the transition of the Naga Power Plant complex from thermal power generation to energy storage. The site was originally built by the National Power Corporation in the 1980s, and AboitizPower completed its acquisition in 2018 through the government's privatization program. The plant's original coal and diesel generating units have since been decommissioned and dismantled. Celso C. Caballero III, President of AboitizPower's Transformation Business Group, said the project reflects the company's efforts to enhance the energy system and improve grid flexibility, resilience, and reliability through investments in people, infrastructure, and technology.
