en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has announced an accelerated emissions reduction plan, targeting net zero emissions by 2028, three years ahead of its original 2031 goal.

The plan builds on Massport's efforts to reduce emissions from its directly managed facilities, vehicles, equipment, and electricity, and incorporates a diversified renewable energy strategy that leverages Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to drive faster growth of domestic renewable energy projects.

The Authority will also adopt a combination of renewable energy portfolio agreements and high-quality carbon offsets to address residual emissions from long-term infrastructure projects. Combined, this strategy will enable Massport to achieve its net zero target by 2028 through RECs and carbon offsets.

Massport CEO Rich Davey stated: "At Massport, we are proud to accelerate our path to net zero, demonstrating that ambitious climate goals can be achieved through innovation, strategic investment, and strong partnerships. Reaching this milestone in 2028 reflects our commitment to leading by example, reducing our environmental impact, and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable transportation system for Massachusetts and the world."

The Authority will continue to prioritize major projects that reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from its operations and equipment. Key milestones include: converting Massport's diesel fleet to renewable diesel; establishing an electric ground service equipment policy to gradually achieve zero-emission ground support; signing a lease for a 20-megawatt solar project at Worcester Regional Airport; evaluating additional solar opportunities on its properties; implementing a site-wide renewable energy strategy; and launching the Logan Airport Remote Terminal in Framingham, a first in the United States.

In addressing Scope 3 emissions—those Massport cannot directly control—projects include a $60 million investment in shore power modernization at Boston's Flynn Cruiseport, a first in New England; and supporting sustainable aviation fuel legislation to secure $30 million in tax credits to promote the adoption of such fuels in the region.

Since announcing its carbon neutrality goal in 2022, Massport has invested over $500 million in related projects. These investments have enabled the Authority to lay the groundwork for further emissions reductions in the coming years, working to secure renewable energy supply, expand electric vehicle charging capacity, and implement large-scale sustainable infrastructure projects from planning through execution.
