en.Wedoany.com Reported - This year, wind farms will bring nearly €75 million in commercial rates revenue to Irish local governments, an increase of almost €5.6 million compared to last year.
This analysis, commissioned by the Irish Wind Energy Association and conducted by Halpin, shows that the annual rates revenue from wind farms has risen from €69.27 million in March 2025 to €74.87 million in March 2026.
Among the counties, Kerry County Council will receive €11.04 million in rates from wind farms this year, accounting for over 20% of its commercial rates revenue. Although no wind farms currently pay commercial rates in the Cork County Council area, it is expected to receive €7.65 million in rates in 2026, representing 5.52% of its commercial rates revenue. Offaly County will receive €7.94 million in rates, accounting for nearly 31% of its commercial rates revenue.
David Halpin, who was responsible for data collection, stated that the contribution of the wind energy industry to local councils should not be underestimated. Outside major urban areas, wind projects are often among the largest single sources of rates in their respective counties. In nine counties, wind farms currently contribute over 10% of commercial rates revenue.
Noel Cunniffe, Chief Executive of the Irish Wind Energy Association, said that this €75 million investment provides significant support to small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly in rural Ireland. Without this funding, these businesses would face higher tax burdens.
