en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mitsubishi Power, the power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has received an order to supply key boiler components for two large-scale thermal power plants in Saudi Arabia, converting their existing heavy oil boilers into dual-fuel boilers capable of switching between or co-firing natural gas and heavy oil. This project is part of the fuel conversion program under Saudi Vision 2030, helping the country reduce CO₂ emissions. Leveraging its technical expertise as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the existing boilers, Mitsubishi Power will support the fuel conversion and ensure long-term stable operation of the plants after the retrofit. The contract was signed jointly with Dar Al Balad Contracting and Operations (DAB), a local engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company, and Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery, the authorized agent of Mitsubishi Power.

The target thermal power plants are the Jeddah South Power Plant and the Shuqaiq Power Plant, located on Saudi Arabia's west coast. Each plant has a capacity of approximately 2.9 gigawatts, consisting of four units (Units 1 to 4), which have been gradually commissioned since 2017. Mitsubishi Power, having supplied the existing boiler components as the OEM during the construction phase of the plants, will now undertake the supply of boilers for fuel conversion based on these existing assets.
The project is being advanced within the framework of Saudi Arabia's energy policy, with the end customer being Saudi Energy (SE). Through long-term local partner DAB, Mitsubishi Power will be responsible for converting the existing heavy oil boilers into dual-fuel boilers and will continue to provide technical support to ensure the long-term stable operation of the plants.
Saudi Arabia is promoting a shift in its power generation fuel structure from heavy oil to natural gas under the national strategy "Saudi Vision 2030," with a target to increase the share of natural gas-fired power generation to over 50%. The government has instructed domestic power producers, including SE, to initiate natural gas-fired power generation, accelerating the pace of fuel conversion at power plants nationwide. In the west coast region, where the proportion of heavy oil-fired power generation is relatively high and electricity demand is strong, switching the fuel of existing plants from heavy oil to natural gas is crucial for maintaining stable power supply while meeting environmental requirements.
Makoto Fujita, Senior General Manager of the Steam Power Business Division at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Energy Systems, stated that the Jeddah South and Shuqaiq power plants play a key role in ensuring a stable power supply on Saudi Arabia's west coast. As the OEM of the existing boilers, the company is proud to participate in this fuel conversion project, contributing to the country's energy transition and CO₂ emission reduction. Mitsubishi Power will further promote the widespread application of high-performance, reliable technologies by advancing low-carbon and decarbonized energy solutions and modernizing existing power generation assets, thereby supporting global environmental protection while ensuring a stable power supply necessary for economic development.
