en.Wedoany.com Reported - PT Pertamina (Persero) has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the West Java Provincial Government to develop low-carbon hydrogen, biomethane, and biofuels from municipal waste, aiming to drive the clean energy transition. The agreement, signed on July 29 in Bandung, is designed to build an integrated hydrogen ecosystem while addressing waste management challenges and accelerating renewable energy development in West Java.
Emma Sri Martini, Pertamina's Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development, explained that one of the key initiatives under the cooperation is to collect methane generated at the Sarimukti landfill in West Bandung Regency, purify it into biomethane, and further process it into low-carbon hydrogen, forming a waste-to-energy ecosystem. The project will be jointly implemented by Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (PNRE) and Pertamina Gas, with each responsible for different segments of the value chain, including feedstock supply, processing, infrastructure development, distribution, and commercialization. International partner Hyundai from South Korea will also participate to accelerate the application of low-carbon energy technologies.
Emma stated that the project is expected to serve as a pilot model for Indonesia's hydrogen ecosystem and could be replicated in other regions if successfully implemented. She emphasized that this collaboration reflects Pertamina's commitment to environmental protection, community development, and sustainable growth.
At the same event, the West Java Provincial Government launched the groundbreaking ceremony for the Legok Nangka Waste-to-Energy Plant (PSEL). The facility is designed to process approximately 2,000 tons of waste per day, with a power generation capacity of 40 megawatts (MW), while also supporting hydrogen and biomethane production. Yuliot Tanjung, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, stated that the facility is expected to become operational by 2029 and will create approximately 1,500 jobs, promoting a circular economy by converting waste into clean energy and renewable fuels.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said the Legok Nangka project will solidify the province's position as one of Indonesia's leading clean energy hubs. He also revealed that similar waste-to-energy facilities are being planned in other areas of West Java to improve waste management and increase renewable energy output.
