en.Wedoany.com Reported - French energy group Engie and French industrial group Legrand have signed France's first hourly-matched renewable energy power supply agreement (24/7 power purchase agreement). The agreement will take effect from 2029 to 2031, during which Engie will match renewable energy generation with Legrand's electricity consumption on an hourly basis.
Under the agreement, Engie will supply Legrand with electricity generated from a portfolio of renewable energy assets across multiple generation sites. The goal is for 70% of Legrand's hourly electricity consumption to be covered by an equivalent amount of renewable energy generation, with this ratio subject to regular monitoring.
The agreement's certification adopts the EnergyTag international standard, used to verify the hourly correspondence between generation and consumption. Killian Daly, CEO of EnergyTag, in an interview with pv magazine in March 2026, called the annual offsetting method that typically underpins corporate clean energy consumption claims a "farce," and advocated for a transition toward hourly-matched contract models sourcing from power plants within the same electricity market region.
Engie stated that certification compliant with the EnergyTag standard will ensure transparency and traceability of supply. Meanwhile, this hourly-matched power purchase agreement is compatible with the evolving direction of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. The GHG Protocol, an international standard for emissions accounting, is currently under revision, with proposed changes including the introduction of more granular methodologies in renewable energy consumption claims. Significant changes to the Protocol could impact the corporate power purchase agreement (cPPA) market. JP Cerda, CEO of the Renewabl platform, told pv magazine in June that regulatory uncertainty may already be slowing activity in this market.
Pending the completion of the GHG Protocol revision, Engie has launched its first 24/7 agreement in France and is promoting this continuous renewable power supply model to commercial and industrial customers through an online self-assessment tool.
Sébastien Hubau, General Manager of Engie's global B2B business, called the contract "a true milestone." He stated that Legrand, as a pioneering customer, choosing this model demonstrates that renewable electricity can be contracted in a more granular, transparent, and ambitious way, and that any industrial company can achieve this. Morgan Malecotte, Director of Legrand France, said that adopting the 24/7 renewable power supply model reflects the company's commitment to moving toward greater transparency and alignment with its energy transition goals.
