New design unveiled for Anderson Street level crossing removal project in Melbourne, Australia, with completion slated for 2029

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Anderson Street level crossing removal project in Yarraville, Melbourne, Australia, has revealed further design details, featuring two new pedestrian and cycling underpasses to replace the existing Anderson Street level crossing, enhancing safety and accessibility along the railway corridor.

The project conducted a round of community engagement from May to July, receiving over 1,200 online survey responses and hosting eight community workshops, with feedback incorporated into the design wherever possible. The project team will return to the community in September to explain the selected design option and outline the reasons why other options were not pursued.

Community members can attend online workshops on Thursday, September 10 at 5:30 PM or Monday, September 14 at 12:00 PM; small in-person sessions will also be held from 4:30 PM on Thursday, September 17 and from 9:30 AM on Saturday, September 19, with registration required for all sessions.

The design responds to community feedback calling for the preservation of the area's existing rural character. The main Anderson Street underpass will feature stairs and two elevators on both sides of the railway, accommodating cyclists and those using prams, mobility aids, and wheelchairs; a second underpass located north of the station, near Murray Street and Goulburn Street, will include stairs and an accessible ramp. The project team's recently released report, "Choosing the best design for the pedestrian and cycling underpasses in Yarraville," also explains the option selection process.

Under the current schedule, Anderson Street will be closed to vehicle traffic in 2028, with the new underpasses expected to be completed in 2029. Following the removal of the road crossing, a pedestrian-friendly plaza will also be created east of the railway line. The project team stated that community feedback will continue to inform subsequent design work as the project progresses.

The Anderson Street project is part of a broader program to remove five level crossings in Melbourne's inner west, involving Newport, Altona, Spotswood, and Yarraville. These works aim to eliminate level crossings along the Werribee Line, which is planned to be boom gate-free by 2029.
