Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 15, The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has updated its Short-Term Energy Outlook released on August 12, revising projections for renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and biodiesel production for the coming years.

Renewable diesel production for 2024 is estimated at 210,000 barrels per day, consistent with last month’s forecast. The 2026 projection has been increased to 260,000 barrels per day, up from 250,000 barrels per day in the previous outlook. Production in 2025 remains unchanged from earlier estimates. In comparison, renewable diesel production in 2024 averaged 210,000 barrels per day.

Net imports of renewable diesel are forecast at -20,000 barrels per day for both 2025 and 2026, the same as last month’s outlook. This compares to net imports of 30,000 barrels per day in 2024. The EIA has lowered its forecast for 2025 renewable diesel consumption to 180,000 barrels per day, down from the July forecast of 190,000 barrels per day. Consumption for 2026 is expected to remain at 230,000 barrels per day, unchanged from last month’s projection. Renewable diesel consumption in 2024 averaged 240,000 barrels per day.

Production of “other biofuels,” which includes renewable heating oil, renewable jet fuel such as SAF, alternative jet fuel, biojet, renewable naphtha, renewable gasoline, and emerging biofuels, is forecast to average 40,000 barrels per day in 2024. This projection remains the same for 2025, revised downward from the July forecast of 50,000 barrels per day. In 2024, production of these fuels averaged 20,000 barrels per day.

Net imports of “other biofuels” are projected at zero for 2025 and 2026, consistent with 2024. Consumption is forecast at 40,000 barrels per day in 2025, unchanged from last month, and 40,000 barrels per day in 2026, revised down from 50,000 barrels per day in the July outlook. Consumption in 2024 averaged 20,000 barrels per day.

Biodiesel production is forecast to average 90,000 barrels per day in 2024 and 100,000 barrels per day in 2025, with both projections unchanged from last month. In 2024, production averaged 110,000 barrels per day. Net imports of biodiesel are expected to remain at zero for 2025 and 2026, the same as in the previous outlook, compared to 20,000 barrels per day in 2024.

Biodiesel consumption is projected to average 90,000 barrels per day in 2024 and 100,000 barrels per day in 2025, with both estimates unchanged from last month’s report. In 2024, biodiesel consumption averaged 120,000 barrels per day.

The updated EIA outlook reflects shifts in renewable fuel production capacity, trade flows, and consumption patterns, indicating steady growth in renewable diesel output and stable biodiesel forecasts, alongside moderated expectations for other biofuels and SAF.
