Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 21, Shanxi, China’s leading coal-producing province, recorded 756.44 million tonnes of raw coal output in the first seven months of 2025, reflecting a 7.2% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the provincial statistics bureau. The province accounted for 27.2% of China’s total coal production during this time, reinforcing its key role in the nation’s energy sector.
The Daqin Railway, a vital coal transportation link in northern China, achieved a cumulative freight volume of 9 billion tonnes by August 21, 2025. Stretching 653 kilometers from Datong in Shanxi to Qinhuangdao port in Hebei, the railway, operational since December 28, 1988, handles approximately one-fifth of China’s rail-transported coal. It facilitates the movement of coal from Shanxi, Shaanxi, and western Inner Mongolia to eastern industrial centers.
A Ministry of Natural Resources report indicates that China’s total coal reserves stood at 207 billion tonnes by the end of 2022, with Shanxi holding approximately 48.3 billion tonnes, underscoring its significant contribution to national energy resources. The province’s robust production and reserves support its position as a cornerstone of China’s energy supply chain.
An official from the Shanxi provincial statistics bureau stated: “Shanxi’s coal output growth reflects the province’s commitment to meeting energy demands efficiently.” The Daqin Railway’s milestone was highlighted by a company representative, who noted: “Achieving 9 billion tonnes in freight volume demonstrates the railway’s critical role in ensuring stable coal supply to industrial hubs.”
The efficient operation of the Daqin Railway supports Shanxi’s ability to transport coal to key markets, enhancing the reliability of energy distribution across China. The railway’s infrastructure, connecting major coal-producing regions to coastal ports, enables seamless delivery to meet industrial and power generation needs.
Shanxi’s increased coal production aligns with efforts to optimize output while maintaining safety and efficiency standards. The province continues to invest in modernizing its coal industry, balancing high production with sustainable practices. The Daqin Railway’s capacity to handle large freight volumes ensures that coal from Shanxi and neighboring regions reaches consumers effectively, supporting economic growth.
This milestone in freight volume and Shanxi’s strong production figures highlight the region’s pivotal role in China’s energy landscape. The collaboration between robust coal output and efficient transportation infrastructure underscores the commitment to meeting national energy demands reliably.
