Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 22, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), a subholding company of HD Hyundai, has acquired a 100 percent stake in Doosan Enerbility’s Vietnamese subsidiary, Doosan Vina, for 290 billion won ($210 million). The deal was completed on Wednesday and secures a key manufacturing base in Southeast Asia to strengthen HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding equipment supply chain.

Doosan Vina, established in 2006 in the Dung Quat Economic Zone in Quang Ngai, central Vietnam, produces equipment for thermal power plants, modules for liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, and port cranes. Through this acquisition, HD Hyundai has secured a critical supply chain for industrial equipment in Southeast Asia under HD KSOE.

As part of its strategy, HD KSOE plans to build a new facility on the Doosan Vina site dedicated to producing independent cargo tanks for environmentally friendly ships, including LNG-powered vessels and ammonia carriers. These tanks will be shipped to Korea for integration into shipbuilding projects.

In addition, HD KSOE intends to leverage Doosan Vina as a key production base for its port crane business in Asia. Doosan Vina has established its capabilities in this area, supplying 26 port cranes to destinations including Singapore during 2023 and 2024. This expansion strengthens HD KSOE’s ability to meet growing regional demand for port logistics equipment.

The acquisition also reflects Doosan Enerbility’s decision to adjust its business portfolio. The company is selling overseas assets to secure capital for new investments in advanced energy sectors, including small modular reactors, gas turbines, and hydrogen-related technologies. By divesting Doosan Vina, Doosan Enerbility will focus its resources on these strategic areas.

For HD Hyundai, this acquisition aligns with long-term objectives to enhance its global supply chain resilience and support the construction of next-generation vessels designed for energy transition markets. The addition of Doosan Vina provides both established production capacity and opportunities for future expansion, particularly in equipment for sustainable shipping solutions.

With Doosan Vina integrated into its operations, HD KSOE gains direct access to a large-scale manufacturing site in central Vietnam, reinforcing its industrial base in Southeast Asia. This will help the company improve supply efficiency and reduce dependency on external suppliers while supporting its competitive position in global shipbuilding.

Overall, the acquisition marks an important step in HD Hyundai’s strategy to combine shipbuilding expertise with an expanded production footprint across Asia. The planned construction of new facilities and diversification into cargo tanks and port cranes demonstrates the group’s intention to position itself strongly in both energy-related infrastructure and environmentally friendly maritime transport. The combination of existing crane production experience and future-focused equipment development highlights Doosan Vina’s role as a cornerstone of HD KSOE’s growth in the region.
