Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 27, Syria’s telecommunications ministry has signed an agreement with Barcelona-based Medusa Submarine Cable System for the landing of the country’s first international submarine cable, state-run Ikhbariya TV reported on Saturday.

The cable system is designed to connect 12 countries across North Africa and southern Europe, according to Medusa’s website. It will also act as a corridor linking the Mediterranean Sea to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea, Reuters reported.

Syria’s communications infrastructure has faced significant challenges due to years of conflict and long-term sanctions, resulting in limited internet connectivity. Many users rely on costly mobile data rather than fixed broadband for basic online tasks. The new cable is expected to significantly improve internet access and reduce connectivity costs.

Officials said the project is part of a broader effort to modernize Syria’s digital infrastructure. In June, a senior Syrian official and a second government representative told Reuters that the country was negotiating with regional telecom operators, including Zain, Etisalat, STC, and Ooredoo, on a $300-million project to expand Syria’s fibre-optic network.

The initiative aims to boost public services, improve communication networks, and support economic development. The landing of the Medusa submarine cable is seen as a key step in addressing the country’s long-standing digital infrastructure gaps.
