Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 29, OMC Power, a distributed renewable energy (DRE) company in India, has formed a strategic partnership with Honda Motor to develop energy storage solutions and repurpose batteries from the electric mobility sector. The collaboration aims to create a circular energy ecosystem that supports both clean power generation and battery reuse. OMC Power is targeting a 1 GWp clean energy portfolio across India.
Building on research and pilot projects carried out in recent years, Honda and OMC have demonstrated how Honda’s detachable and portable batteries—originally used in electric two- and three-wheelers—can be repurposed for stationary storage in clean energy systems. When integrated with OMC’s distributed energy networks, these batteries already supply dependable electricity to remote schools, medical centers, telecom towers, solar rooftops, and small enterprises. The joint model is scheduled for commercial launch by January 2026 and is expected to extend the lifecycle of electric vehicle (EV) batteries while supporting India’s growing demand for storage-based renewable energy.
Minoru Kato, executive officer and chief officer for Motorcycle and Power Products Operations at Honda Motor, stated: “In India, where the shift toward electric motorcycles is progressing, Honda will strive to establish a resource-circulating value chain by facilitating the repurposing of end-of-life electric motorcycle batteries. Through this initiative, with a comprehensive approach from the perspective of both our products and business activities, Honda will contribute to addressing societal issues and making people’s daily lives more enjoyable.”
The alliance will focus on co-developing advanced energy storage technologies that can stabilize mini-grids, support telecom infrastructure, and power rooftop hybrid solar systems. This cooperation also introduces a new business segment for OMC Power, enhancing its Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) model and reinforcing its position in India’s renewable energy market.
OMC Power, backed by Mitsui & Co. and Chubu Electric Power of Japan, has been rapidly scaling its distributed clean energy operations across North and Central India. The company currently operates more than 500 smart mini-grids that power telecom towers, solarize institutional rooftops, and promote climate-resilient livelihoods in rural regions.
Additionally, OMC is implementing one of the world’s largest sustainable healthcare solarization programs in Uttar Pradesh. This project covers over 200 hospitals and medical colleges under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model. It ensures continuous power for essential healthcare services, generates local employment, and is projected to prevent more than 125,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Through the partnership with Honda, OMC Power aims to strengthen India’s clean energy infrastructure while advancing sustainable practices in electric mobility and energy storage, marking a significant step toward a low-carbon, resource-efficient future.
