Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 8, AET has placed an order with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for two LNG dual-fuel suezmax tankers, marking a further expansion of its fleet of lower-emission vessels. The Singapore-based tanker arm of Malaysia’s leading shipping company, MISC, said the deal represents a key step in its strategy to operate dual-fuel ships across all major tanker segments, including aframax, shuttle tanker, suezmax, and VLCC.

Industry sources estimate AET will invest nearly $200 million to have the new vessels delivered by 2029. Once operational, the tankers will join AET’s expanding dual-fuel fleet, which currently includes over 60 vessels powered by LNG, ammonia, and other emerging low-carbon fuels.

LNG is highlighted as one of several alternative fuels AET is developing. Dual-fuel engines running on LNG can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23% on a well-to-wake basis compared with conventional fuels, while also lowering particulate matter, SOₓ, and NOₓ emissions.

Nick Potter, AET President and CEO, said: “With these newbuilds, our dual-fuel fleet will grow to 18 vessels — a clear demonstration of the progress we’re making in delivering more energy with fewer emissions.” He emphasized that the order is another milestone in the company’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Each suezmax will be equipped with an Everllence 6G70ME-C10.5-GI main engine, designed for higher fuel efficiency and reduced methane slip. The vessels will also feature Samsung’s SVESSEL smart ship system for real-time performance monitoring and data-driven optimisation. Additional energy-saving features include SAVER ducts and fins, a rudder bulb, variable frequency drive systems, and a hybrid vertical bow, all aimed at further reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The new order underscores AET’s commitment to expanding its dual-fuel capabilities and advancing the adoption of lower-emission shipping technologies globally. The suezmaxes will operate on key international routes, reinforcing the company’s strategy to combine operational efficiency with environmental responsibility.

By integrating smart ship technology and advanced engine design, AET aims to optimise vessel performance while reducing the environmental footprint of its operations. The addition of the two suezmax tankers is expected to strengthen the company’s position in the global tanker market and support ongoing decarbonisation initiatives across the maritime industry.

This investment aligns with broader industry trends toward sustainable shipping, offering a pathway to meet stricter emissions regulations and growing customer demand for greener transport solutions. The newbuilds will complement AET’s existing dual-fuel vessels and demonstrate the practical application of LNG as a transitional fuel in the move toward lower-carbon maritime operations.
