Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 22, LanzaJet has successfully commenced full commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Soperton, Georgia, United States. The plant is the world’s first to produce jet fuel from ethanol at commercial scale using a non-oil-based renewable feedstock fully compatible with existing aircraft.

The milestone follows 15 years of technology development and represents a major advancement for the aviation sector. LanzaJet’s proprietary alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) process converts ethanol into drop-in SAF, offering a scalable alternative as traditional bio-oil pathways approach feedstock limits.

Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet, said: “This is an important milestone for LanzaJet and our investors, and it is a major win for global aviation. Our story at LanzaJet is one of impact – building a new industry, creating value, and delivering on our commitments regardless of obstacles in our way. We are now in a unique position with technology and operational know-how to shape this global industry in the decade ahead.”

The integrated facility incorporates Technip Energies’ Hummingbird® ethanol-to-ethylene technology and oligomerisation processes developed with the U.S. Department of Energy and LanzaTech. LanzaJet designed, built, and commissioned the complete plant, demonstrating reliable operation of the full production chain.

The ATJ technology accepts diverse sustainable feedstocks including agricultural residues, energy crops, municipal solid waste, and recycled carbon sources. It delivers significant lifecycle greenhouse gas reductions compared with conventional jet fuel and, when blended with standard Jet A-1, requires no changes to aircraft or infrastructure.

Located in Treutlen County, the Freedom Pines Fuels plant represents an investment exceeding $300 million. Construction employed over 300 workers, while ongoing operations support more than 65 direct and indirect jobs in the region.

The facility serves as a reference model for future SAF projects worldwide. LanzaJet is actively deploying the technology in multiple countries including the United States, Australia, Japan, India, the United Kingdom, Colombia, the European Union, the Middle East, and Kazakhstan.

The successful start-up confirms ethanol as a viable, globally available feedstock for SAF production, enabling regions to strengthen agricultural value chains, enhance domestic energy supply, and support economic development through new fuel markets.
