Wedoany.com Report on Jan 31st, The New South Wales Government has recently formally approved the $3.9 billion Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 project, aiming to alleviate housing pressure in Sydney and improve regional transportation. After years of planning, the project has gained momentum, with construction slated to begin in 2027 and passenger services expected to commence in 2031.

The Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 line spans 10 kilometers with 14 stations, connecting the Parramatta Central Business District to Sydney Olympic Park. The project includes constructing two bridges crossing the Parramatta River, with the main bridge stretching 320 meters to connect Melrose Park and Wentworth Point. The line design will integrate with existing networks such as the Sydney Metro West, forming a multi-center transportation system.
The project is managed by Transport for New South Wales. Early works contractor John Holland has secured a $322 million contract for bridge and partial track construction. Technical advisory services are provided by a joint venture of GHD and AECOM, with procurement for the main works contractor set to commence in 2026.
The light rail project is expected to support housing development for approximately 100,000 residents by 2041, covering high-density areas along the route such as Camellia, Rydalmere, and Melrose Park. The project also includes 8.5 kilometers of walking and cycling paths, providing active transport options. Once operational, the travel time from Parramatta to Olympic Park will be approximately 37 minutes, with a peak-hour service frequency of 7.5 minutes.
