en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 27th, Rolls-Royce SMR, a UK-based developer of small modular reactors (SMRs), and Studsvik, a Swedish nuclear technology services company, have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their strategic collaboration. The aim is to jointly advance the global deployment of Rolls-Royce SMR's "factory-built" nuclear power plants.

According to the MoU, the two parties will integrate Studsvik's comprehensive technical service capabilities to collaborate in key areas such as fuel qualification and testing, plant lifetime management, hot cell technology, core design and operational simulation, and regulatory licensing support.
Chris Cholerton, CEO of Rolls-Royce SMR, stated that this collaboration will strengthen its European supply chain layout and bring together world-class expertise. The President of Studsvik pointed out that their close cooperation will significantly boost the commercialization process of Rolls-Royce SMR in the Nordic region, the UK, and Europe, contributing to stable energy supply.
Notably, Studsvik recently acquired Kärnfull Next, a Swedish SMR project development company, expanding its role from a pure technical service provider to a comprehensive "technology + project development" service provider, making it a more holistic partner.
This collaboration takes place against the backdrop of Rolls-Royce SMR's accelerating global business expansion. Its 470-megawatt small pressurized water reactor design, with 90% of modules prefabricated in factories, can significantly reduce construction risks and timelines. This technology has been selected by the UK government as the preferred technology for its first SMR project, with a target final investment decision in 2029. Concurrently, the company has also been selected by Czech utility CEZ for planned new build projects totaling up to 3 gigawatts. Furthermore, the Ringhals site in Sweden has received supportive applications for new nuclear projects, including proposals featuring Rolls-Royce SMR technology.
Through this deep partnership with Studsvik, Rolls-Royce SMR not only reinforces the essential service support system required for its technology deployment but also lays a solid technical and supply chain foundation for project bidding and future construction in several key European markets.
