en.Wedoany.com Reported - National Grid has recently energised a second new high-voltage electricity circuit connecting the Dinorwig pumped storage power station to the North Wales transmission network. This marks another step forward following the commissioning of the first circuit in January last year, aimed at replacing the aging infrastructure installed in the 1970s between the Dinorwig and Pentir substations. The project, advanced in collaboration with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and Siemens Energy, aims to ensure the reliable delivery of clean electricity from the station for decades to come.An image related to the Dinorwig circuit project

The Dinorwig pumped storage power station, located on Mount Elidir Fawr in Gwynedd, is operated by First Hydro Company, with ENGIE holding a 75% stake. It provides fast-response generation to help stabilise the grid. Since autumn 2021, upgrade works have included reinforcing the Dinorwig substation within the mountain, employing a hybrid SF6 and clean air gas-insulated switchgear technology. National Grid plans to reduce network SF6 emissions by 50% by 2030. The focus now shifts to completing the third circuit and continuing substation works.

Mark Brindley, Construction Director at National Grid, said: "Energising the second new circuit is a significant step forward for this project. We are strengthening a key clean energy connection in North Wales and ensuring Dinorwig can continue to power homes, businesses, and communities for many years to come." He added: "We are very grateful for the ongoing patience and understanding of the local community as we progress the final stages of this complex generational project."

Peter Kirk, Managing Director of Energy at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, said: "We are proud to have delivered this important work in North Wales, helping to bring cleaner energy onto the National Grid and enhancing the network's resilience. Energising the second circuit is the latest success story from a strong collaboration, where we used innovative approaches in challenging environments to upgrade the existing circuits and increase capacity between Dinorwig and Pentir substations."

Delphine Chérèl-Spahan, Managing Director of ENGIE Hydro UK, said: "It's fantastic to see the second circuit energised – another vital step for Dinorwig's future and enhanced reliability. As owner and operator, ENGIE is investing to extend the station's life and is proud to support its delivery alongside our partners; strengthening the delivery of clean, flexible electricity from Wales to homes across Britain."
