en.Wedoany.com Reported - CS Energy, a Queensland state-owned enterprise, has awarded a $380 million contract to Monadelphous for the construction of auxiliary facilities at the Brigalow Peaking Power Plant near Chinchilla.

The gas-fired peaking power plant will be built adjacent to CS Energy's Kogan Creek Power Station and can be rapidly started during peak electricity demand to support grid reliability. Once operational, the 400-megawatt facility can reach full output within five minutes, supplying power to over 150,000 Queensland households during peak periods.
The Brigalow Peaking Power Plant is part of the Crisafulli Government's energy roadmap, which focuses on investments in coal and gas-fired power generation to ensure domestic energy security and meet Queensland's electricity needs. Tony Bellas, Acting CEO of CS Energy, stated that this appointment marks a key milestone for the project. CS Energy is advancing the project in partnership with APA Group.
Bellas noted that fast-start gas-fired peaking power plants will play a crucial role in Queensland's future, providing longer-duration power compared to short-duration batteries and intermittent renewable energy sources. He expressed anticipation for collaborating with Monadelphous, a contractor with extensive experience in Australia's energy and mining sectors.
The auxiliary facilities contract covers the main construction work for the Brigalow Peaking Power Plant, including civil and mechanical engineering, piping, and the installation of gas turbines. Contractor CMC has completed preliminary site works, including access roads and an intersection upgrade, and will soon begin large-scale earthworks to prepare the construction platform. Following the completion of large-scale earthworks, Monadelphous will commence the auxiliary facilities work, targeting a start in the third quarter of 2026. Depending on final commissioning, the Brigalow Peaking Power Plant is expected to enter operation in early 2029.
