en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is advancing the replacement project of 10 ship-to-shore cranes at the Cape Town ship repair facility, currently in the evaluation phase, aiming to restore lifting capacity and reduce dry dock operation delays.

Acting Port Manager Ophelia Shabane stated at the recent annual Maritime Economy Conference held in Cape Town that this investment is part of a strategy to ensure the continued suitability of critical equipment. She noted that the investment goal is to ensure the facility is not only available but also adapted to today's environment, capable of meeting current ship repair service demands.

"One of the key items we are currently advancing is the procurement of ship-to-shore cranes. Our existing cranes have reached the end of their service life, and we are now in the evaluation phase for procuring 10 new cranes for the ship repair facility," Shabane said.

These cranes will significantly enhance operational efficiency. She stated that without this equipment, preparing a dry dock foundation could take four to five days, whereas with proper equipment, it would only take a few hours. "This reduces the time for vessel docking and repairs, allowing ships to enter the port, complete required maintenance, and leave the dock more quickly."

"Alleviating port congestion requires overall efficiency improvements. Although significant progress has been made in cargo operations, there is also room for improvement in the ship repair sector," she said.
