en.Wedoany.com Reported - Lithuania's Klaipėda Port has launched the country's first green hydrogen production and refueling station, which will supply green hydrogen for passenger cars, heavy-duty trucks, ships, and port operations, aiming to support the development of a low-emission transportation ecosystem.

Algis Latakas, Director of the Klaipėda Port Authority, stated that just a few years ago, green hydrogen at the port was only a vision, but now this facility has been put into operation, writing a new chapter in the country's energy transition.
The project was launched in 2023, with construction beginning in the summer of 2025. Major equipment arrived in October 2025, and the first batch of green hydrogen was produced in April 2026. The refueling station uses a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer to produce hydrogen, capable of generating approximately 127 tons of green hydrogen annually at full capacity.
The Klaipėda Port Authority will use about 25% of the on-site hydrogen production for its own operations. A hydrogen-powered garbage collection vessel is soon to be deployed at the port, and the authority has also added a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai to its fleet. The port authority stated that these investments demonstrate its commitment to testing and deploying clean technologies under real operating conditions.
The facility will operate as an open infrastructure, serving the broader transportation and logistics industry. The Klaipėda Port Authority is collaborating with LTG Group, Klaipėda Stevedoring Company BEGA, and Volvo Lietuva to explore the application of hydrogen in road transport, railway operations, and port activities. Commercial hydrogen supply is expected to begin in the autumn of 2026.
The project is part of the "Next Generation Lithuania Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan" and has received funding from the EU's NextGenerationEU program. The total investment in the hydrogen production and refueling station amounts to approximately 12 million euros, with the EU contributing about 6 million euros. Inžinerinis projektavimas, MT Group, and Gevalda are responsible for the project's delivery.
