en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) of South Korea has led smart city standardization efforts within the ITU-T SG20 working group, successfully securing one international standard and three pre-standards.

ETRI announced on the 16th that Lee Joon-seop, head of the Convergence Standards Research Division, was elected as the first chair of the "Focus Group on AI for Smart Sustainable Cities and Communities" (FG-AI4SSC) at the recent SG20 plenary meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Led by Director Lee Joon-seop, this focus group aims to establish a global standard framework that connects and integrates currently independently operated city services—such as transportation, energy, environment, and safety—through artificial intelligence technology, thereby creating more efficient and convenient cities. The focus group's activity period is one year, extendable if necessary, with the first meeting scheduled for September this year in Tampere, Finland.

To establish this focus group, ETRI formally proposed its formation at the ITU-T SG20 Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting (SG20RP-AP) in April this year. After receiving support from 22 member organizations, the proposal was finally approved at this plenary meeting.

At the Third United Nations Virtual Worlds Day and Cityverse Conference held before the plenary meeting, SG20 Chair Kim Hyung-jun (ETRI Research Specialist), Director Lee Joon-seop, and Senior Researcher Seon Gyeong-jae introduced South Korea's AI-based smart city policies and the current status of Cityverse development. Chair Kim Hyung-jun has served as the ITU-T SG20 chair since 2022, overseeing international standardization efforts in areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins, and smart cities.

Additionally, the approved standard is an IoT-based elevator monitoring framework. Pre-approved projects include an IoT-based metaverse platform, a digital twin visualization system, and smart livestock services. ETRI stated that, in addition to these achievements, two items—AI-integrated intelligent digital twin requirements and AI-based proactive life support services—have been adopted as new standardization topics, with discussions set to begin.

Lee Seung-yoon, head of the Standards Research Division, stated, "This is the first consultative body to formally initiate international standard discussions on the integrated operation of urban infrastructure and citizen services using AI. Beyond quantitative achievements, we will focus on developing impactful standards." ITU-T SG20 Chair Kim Hyung-jun predicted, "South Korea has simultaneously secured a new group and the first chair position, which will serve as a significant opportunity to ensure leadership in global AI smart city standardization."
