en.Wedoany.com Reported - Japan's IHI Corporation has developed a 100% ammonia-fueled boiler and completed full technical verification, making it suitable for thermal power generation and steam supply applications.

Development of this 100% ammonia fuel system began in 2022. In large-scale tests conducted at IHI's Aioi Plant—also the site where IHI and GE Vernova jointly tested a 100% ammonia-fueled gas turbine—the system achieved stable combustion, reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and unburned ammonia, and met the load fluctuation requirements necessary for thermal power plant operation.

Alongside advancing the pure ammonia fuel system, IHI previously completed a demonstration test of 20% ammonia-coal co-firing at Unit 4 of Japan's Hekinan Power Plant in preparation for commercial operations. The company is also developing a 60% ammonia co-firing burner that can be implemented with minimal modifications to existing facilities.

IHI's next step will be to enter the "operational evaluation" phase for full-scale boiler units.
