en.Wedoany.com Reported - The launch event for the new book "History of Shanghai Port (1978–2022)" was held on the morning of July 10 during the opening ceremony of the 2026 China Maritime Day Shanghai-themed activities. The book was compiled by the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd., with participation from 15 units including the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, the Yangtze Estuary Waterway Administration, and the China Maritime Museum, and took four and a half years to complete. Gu Jinshan, President of the China Ports Association; Song Xiaodong, President of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd.; Zhao Feng, Director of the China Maritime Museum; and Wen Zeyuan, President of Shanghai People's Publishing House, jointly attended the launch ceremony. Shen Jun, former Vice Mayor of Shanghai, former Executive Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Yangshan Deepwater Port Area Construction Headquarters, and Director of the Expert Committee on Shanghai Port History, wrote the preface for the book.

According to Zhang Lin, former Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission and Editor-in-Chief of the Shanghai Port History, the book contains one million words and is divided into eight chapters. Based on historical facts, it uses text, charts, and photographs to chronicle the journey of Shanghai Port from a traditional bulk and general cargo port to a world-class container hub port from the reform and opening-up in 1978 to 2022. The book details key projects such as Shanghai Port breaking through resource endowment constraints, renovating the Zhanghuabang and Jungong Road port areas, constructing the Waigaoqiao Phase I to VI container port areas, the Shanghai International Shipping Center Yangshan Phase I to III deepwater port areas, and the fully automated Yangshan Phase IV container terminal. It also covers the coordinated efforts to manage the deepwater channel of the Yangtze Estuary, documenting the entire process of Shanghai Port moving from the Huangpu River to the Yangtze Estuary and into the East China Sea. The book records the collaborative and determined efforts of the Shanghai local government, central government agencies in Shanghai, and port and shipping enterprises. The publication of "History of Shanghai Port (1978–2022)" fills a gap in the study of contemporary Shanghai port development history and interprets the development law of "a city thrives on its port, and a port serves its city" as well as Shanghai's urban character of "openness, innovation, and inclusiveness."

At the event, relevant leaders presented the new book to four representatives from the port and shipping industry and 15 participating units. An old port worker who had participated in the construction of Yangshan Port emotionally said while flipping through the new book: "Over the past 40-plus years of reform and opening-up, Shanghai Port has achieved remarkable and globally recognized accomplishments, turning the impossible into reality. This is due to the wise decisions of the Party Central Committee, the perseverance of Chinese researchers in overcoming difficulties, and the tireless dedication of port workers day and night. The port's container throughput has continuously set new world records... The processes, the milestones, and the typical examples of the people and events involved are countless and beyond enumeration. The past is not like smoke, but evokes deep emotions."

With the official release of "History of Shanghai Port (1978–2022)," the historical mosaic of Shanghai Port will become more complete. Standing at a new historical starting point, this work will undoubtedly help Shanghai Port take on new missions, achieve new goals, and write a new chapter.
