en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Department of Infrastructure and Transport of South Australia has announced a major upgrade to the intersection of Richmond Road, Railway Terrace, and Croydon Road in western Adelaide as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project, aimed at improving traffic flow and efficiency between the city and South Road.

The project, with a total investment exceeding AUD 70 million, is jointly funded by multiple parties and is part of the AUD 850 million Broader Network Upgrades package under the T2D project. Early works will commence later this month in Keswick. The upgrade aims to improve travel between the city and South Road while providing better access to local destinations, including the Mile End Homemaker Centre, SA Athletics Stadium, and Netball SA Stadium.

As part of a series of ongoing and completed road network improvements, this project complements the current work to achieve non-stop South Road. Approximately 36,000 vehicles pass through the intersection daily, and increasing capacity is crucial for Richmond Road as a section of the T2D motorway between the north and south tunnels.

Key features of the upgrade include: widening the intersection with new dedicated right-turn and left-turn lanes onto Railway Terrace (northbound) and two dedicated through lanes in both directions; widening Railway Terrace with new dedicated left-turn (eastbound) and right-turn (westbound) lanes onto Richmond Road; extending right-turn slip lanes on Ashford Road and Hampton Road; adding a lane on Richmond Road (westbound) between Railway Terrace and Keswick Creek, providing two lanes in each direction along the entire length of Richmond Road; and installing dedicated bicycle lanes at all intersection approaches and along Richmond Road from Railway Terrace to Anzac Highway. Other improvements include new pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, LED road lighting, line marking, and drainage systems.

Major construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, with completion expected by the end of 2028. The project is anticipated to support 145 jobs during the construction phase. The timeline has been carefully planned to coordinate and sequence works on Richmond Road and South Road as part of the T2D project. The AUD 850 million Broader Network Upgrades package is part of the AUD 15.4 billion T2D project budget, equally funded by the federal government and the South Australian government.

These network improvements also include previously completed or ongoing projects, such as the successful removal of the bend at the intersections of Grange Road, Holbrooks Road, and East Avenue, with major works completed and the intersection open to traffic; the recently completed upgrades to James Congdon Drive and Sir Donald Bradman Drive, which improved traffic flow for inbound drivers by adding three new right-turn lanes; and the recently completed upgrades to Raglan Avenue, Edward Street, and South Road, which opened to traffic in April 2026, with minor finishing works continuing over the coming months. The non-stop South Road project is expected to be completed by 2031, saving commuters up to 40 minutes during peak hours.
