en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 20, German asset management firm Luxcara advanced the construction of the Waltrop battery energy storage system, with project shareholders approving the next phase of construction. Located in Waltrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the energy storage project has a planned capacity of 900MW and a storage scale of at least 1800MWh, making it one of the large-scale grid-side energy storage projects currently underway in Germany.
The Waltrop energy storage project is jointly advanced by Luxcara, Swiss energy and infrastructure company BKW, and T-BESS 1 GmbH & Co KG, a subsidiary of the German municipal utility alliance Trianel. Under the project structure, Luxcara is responsible for 520MW of capacity, BKW for 300MW, and T-BESS 1 for 80MW. The project has previously obtained final permits for the substation and battery systems, key equipment has been ordered, and preparatory work has been ongoing for several months.
The next phase of the energy storage project will advance the construction of the substation and key infrastructure. Main construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026, with commissioning expected in 2028. Once completed, the battery energy storage system will provide peak shaving, reserve capacity, frequency support, and renewable energy integration capabilities for the German grid. According to early plans, the Waltrop energy storage project may later be expanded to a capacity of up to 1.5GW, though the actual expansion pace will depend on grid demand, business models, and project execution.
