Ampera in the US Showcases 3D-Printed Thorium-Based Small Reactor

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Ampera has unveiled a full-scale small modular reactor (SMR) at its innovation center in Florida, USA.

The reactor is planned to use thorium as fuel. Thorium is more abundant in nature than uranium. Ampera claims the reactor can operate continuously for up to 30 years without refueling. Its core is an integrated silicon carbide sphere, also manufactured using 3D printing. The system can generate up to 30 megawatts of power, sufficient to meet the electricity needs of a medium-sized data center. The unit is compact and can be transported using standard container transport.

Brian Matthew, founder and CEO of Ampera, stated at the unveiling: "Advanced technology and additive manufacturing have paved a clear path for accelerating the commercialization of new nuclear technologies."

Ampera is paving the way for mass production. In February 2026, the company announced plans to initiate a pre-licensing process for its microreactor; in June of the same year, it established a subsidiary in Australia to supply thorium raw materials for domestic fuel production in the United States.
