en.Wedoany.com Reported - Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) has purchased a batch of industrial-grade batteries from Tesla, which are likely to be deployed at xAI's data center. This purchase reflects the highly interconnected operations among Elon Musk's companies. Musk is the CEO and largest shareholder of SpaceX, while also leading Tesla. In 2025, Musk's artificial intelligence venture xAI acquired his social media platform X; earlier this year, SpaceX acquired xAI.

Before the merger of the two companies, xAI had already purchased Tesla Megapacks batteries worth $430 million for its data centers; in the first quarter of this year, xAI purchased only $34 million worth of such equipment. SpaceX also disclosed in its regulatory filings that, as of December 2025, it had purchased Tesla Cybertrucks worth $131 million at the manufacturer's suggested retail price.

Although xAI relies heavily on natural gas for data center power supply—including the installation of dozens of unlicensed turbines at a site in Mississippi not far from the Colossus data center project—large batteries like the Megapack remain a critical component of data centers. Batteries not only provide substantial backup power in under a second but can also supply additional power when GPUs require it.

The power consumption of AI data centers is not constant, with power demand fluctuating up and down as AI model training and inference workloads vary. These power spikes can result in hefty fees from local utility companies and can also overwhelm on-site generators. Batteries help smooth out these peaks, reducing costs while ensuring the continuous and stable operation of data centers.
