Wedoany.com Report-Jul. 5, Dutch energy developer GIGA Storage has entered the German market through the acquisition of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) project. The 350MW / 1400MWh Project Albatross, located near Merzen in Lower Saxony, marks a significant step in the company’s international expansion strategy.
Originally developed by Isenau Projects, a company specializing in large-scale BESS development in Germany, Project Albatross is designed to support the local electricity grid. Its functions will include frequency regulation, renewable energy integration, and congestion management in one of Germany’s primary energy corridors.
GIGA Storage will take an active role in advancing the project toward construction readiness. The company will provide development capital, technical knowledge, and operational support. The acquisition is backed by InfraVia Capital Partners, a major European infrastructure investor and the majority shareholder of GIGA Storage.
Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage, stated: “Our ambition is to develop and operate multiple gigawatts of energy storage capacity across Europe in the coming years. With the support of InfraVia and our growing project pipeline, we are making significant strides toward this goal – contributing to both energy security and sustainability in key European markets.”
The addition of Project Albatross to GIGA Storage’s portfolio aligns with the company’s broader objective of expanding its presence in strategic locations across Europe. The project also highlights growing interest in BESS technologies as key components of future electricity infrastructure, particularly as renewable energy sources become more prevalent.
Sven Moos, Managing Director of Isenau Projects, said: “We are excited to collaborate with GIGA Storage on Project Albatross. This transaction reflects our focus on high-quality BESS projects that meet the needs of grid operators, investors, and policymakers. Our shared commitment to quality, innovation, and the energy transition makes this partnership natural and compelling.”
The acquisition is expected to enhance GIGA Storage’s capabilities in the European energy storage market and represents the company’s first major project in Germany. With the support of Isenau Projects’ development work and GIGA’s operational resources, Project Albatross aims to provide critical services to the German grid while supporting long-term sustainability goals.
Once completed, the battery storage system will contribute significantly to grid stability and renewable integration, offering flexible energy capacity and responding to real-time demand. The partnership between GIGA Storage and Isenau Projects reflects a shared approach to delivering high-impact, technically advanced infrastructure to support Europe’s evolving energy landscape.
