Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 6, The Datang Zala Hydropower Station in Xizang Autonomous Region, Southwest China, has achieved a key milestone with the installation of the first water distribution ring pipe section in the machine pit. This marks the core installation phase for the world’s largest 500-megawatt impulse turbine, advancing a major clean energy project.

The Zhaoping hydropower station on the main stream of the Guijiang River in Zhaoping County in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region operates at full capacity due to recently abundant rainfall and high-water levels on June 5, 2025.

The turbine supports Xizang’s first million-kilowatt-level hydropower initiative, enhancing the region’s sustainable energy framework. The 411-ton water distribution ring pipe, 28 meters long, 25.2 meters wide, and 4 meters high, was transported in 13 segments. The first 32.1-ton section, with a 3.1-meter diameter, was precisely hoisted using a 400-ton crane in challenging high-altitude conditions.

Sinohydro Bureau 7 Co utilized 3D modeling and physical mock-ups, collaborating with universities to develop an 800-megapascal steel welding process for efficient installation. On July 2, Harbin Electric Machinery Co delivered the 80-ton turbine, featuring 21 water ladles and a 6.23-meter diameter, per Xinhua News Agency.

By December 2024, China’s 94,000+ dams contributed to a 436-million-kilowatt hydropower capacity, generating 1.42 trillion kilowatt-hours yearly, 57 percent of national renewable energy, per the National Energy Administration. This project underscores China’s leadership in hydropower and clean energy development.
