Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 6, India has identified over 200 gigawatts of hydro pumped storage capacity nationwide, supporting its renewable energy ambitions. The Ministry of Power stated that 6.4 GW is operational, 8 GW is under construction, and 61 GW is in planning and development stages.
The nation has reached 50% of its electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, achieving this milestone five years ahead of the 2030 target. This progress highlights India’s dedication to sustainable energy growth.
To ensure a stable power supply, India is prioritizing energy storage systems to complement renewable sources like solar and wind. Union Minister of Power and Housing Affairs, Manohar Lal, noted: “Whilst renewable energy sources like solar and wind have driven this transition, the backbone of a reliable, flexible, and modern power system will increasingly rely on Energy Storage Systems (ESS).” The ministry has allocated INR 9,160 crore to support 43 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage systems under the Viability Gap Funding Scheme.
These efforts, combining hydro pumped storage and battery systems, strengthen India’s energy infrastructure, ensuring reliability and sustainability in meeting future energy needs.
